Today I started the tasks for module one, and immediately ran into problems. I've never even heard of 'telnet' before today, and the whole idea of something new (even though it is really old) got me thinking. I kept trying to use this telnet thingy, but I just couldn't connect to the deakin server. Something was definately wrong!
Then I worked it out... I looked at the discussion forums and found out what other students said, and downloaded a program so that telnet would work... Once that was done, I used trial-and-error to figure out HOW to use the program.
Finally I got it going, and managed to get some results in regards to the tasks for module 1.
Task 1
There are 20 hops involved until the ‘curtin.edu.au’ site was reached. The average time from the tools site to the ‘curtin.edu.au’ website was 244 milliseconds.
I then proceeded to ping the website from my computer by going to 'run', and typing in ‘cmd’, I got an average time of 80ms, which is much less than I expected. The reason I think that it’s so much less is because it made a much quicker trip from Victoria to Perth, than from the website used previously which is probably in America.
FTP task
I managed this one really easily, and downloaded the document that gave me the correct answer.... It can be so easy when you follow instructions :)
Internet Tools
I then did a traceroute from my computer to curtin.edu.au by using some software that I had just downloaded. This was easier to figure out, and in a couple minutes i found out that 18 hops were made until the website was found. This involved less hops because the information didn’t need to travel as far and require as much rerouting.
So now I had used ftp, telnet, and learnt about traceroute. WOW, what a way to start... It's just the first module, and I'm already learning so much.

My first Post!!!
Well I've decided that it's about time that I start a blog, so that I can have a learning log somewhere else, other than just in a Microsoft Word document.
So here it is!
I'll be added sections to this, and trying to keep it up to date with my Net11 studies.
